Upgrading to Fedora 7 didn’t take this long and neither did Fedora 6, but that’s ok – as long as it happens. It’s nearly done with the dependency checking. It’s been getting closer and closer to the end of the bar. Part of me thinks it may be stuck, but after waiting 10 hours to get this far, I don’t want to stop if there’s a chance it will start installing tonight or even tomorrow morning. Before the next upgrade I hope to have more RAM, as I think that’s probably part of the reason why it’s taking so long. Just wanted to update how long it’s taking both for anyone else in this situation and for myself so when Fedora 9 comes out, I can remember how long Fedora 8 took.
I’ve seen some stuff on the mailing lists that implies Fedora 8 seems to be taking a really long time to upgrade for a lot of people….

Glad to hear that I am not the only one waiting for an endless upgrade process. I have the same situation here, upgrading from Fedora 7 to Fedora 8 (64 bit version in both cases), and so far the operation has taken almost 20 hours (yes, you read right, twenty) and is not finished. And can assure you, the problem is not processor speed (a Core Duo E6700 at 2.67GHz) neither memory (4GB), at least in my case. I hope they fix Anaconda as soon as possible, these extremely long upgrade times are unbearable 🙁
Thanks for letting me know that I’m not the only one. I’d suggest doing the yum upgrade as I mention later in this blog. It was more like on the order of 2-3 hours. I’ll be putting up more exact directions soon.

I am over 48 hours (not a typo “48 hours”) into an upgrade from Fedora 6 to Fedora 8. The status screen has been dealing with dependencies the whole time. I am upgrading from from a DVD build from the Fedora 8 iso. Watching the disk led on the PC shows a lot of activity. I am not sure what it is doing though 🙁
Brad, if you have anything from 3rd party repos, you may wish to do a yum upgrade. It’s likely you can wait another 48 hours or more without getting anywhere.
