Hello everybody out there using minix -
I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and
professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing
since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on
things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat
(same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons)
among other things).
I've currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work.
This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, and
I'd like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions
are welcome, but I won't promise I'll implement them :-)

PS. Yes - it's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs.
It is NOT protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never
will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(.
Mayor Ray Nagin should not be allowed to speak
The man who was in trouble last year for saying, “New Orleans, at the end of the day, will be a chocolate city….” is now in trouble for remarks he made last night on CBS’ 60 Minutes. The reporter asked him why, after a year, New Orleans was a mess. He replied, “Look, you guys in New York City can’t fix a hole in the ground, and it’s been five years. So let’s be fair.” The “hole in the ground” he referred to? The former site of the Twin Towers, also known as Ground Zero. Just like the chocolate city remark, which was meant to reflect tensions that aftrican americans may not have the money to return to New Orleans, this new remark is a great example of one of those things you may think to yourself or tell your close friends. However, it’s not something to say on Tv if you are a mayor, especially if you have a history of saying things people find offensive. Then again, he DID get reelected after his chocolate city remarks, so maybe it’s a noteriety thing which will benefit him in the end.
A fun quick customization
tired of a terminal session that looks like

pretty boring right? So just a little command called PS1=“message” can liven things up. The man page intro suggests:
PS1=“What’s next, master?”
Just a reminder
As the British (and even some Americans) begin discussing the possibility of racial profiling after this latest foiled airplane terrorism plot, we should remember that not all terrorists are Arabs or Middle-Eastern-looking. Take, for example, the worst terrorist attack in the US prior to the attacks of 11 Sept 2001 - The Oklahoma City Bombing. The terrorists in that plot, which blew up a federal building and killed many people, were white guys. In fact, although I was young at the time, I remember them saying in the news that they had delayed in capturing the guys and even had given them the chance to get away because they were looking for Arabs instead of white guys. So think about that before you start racial profiling. Also think of the DC Sniper - a black man. There are a lot of people who hate the US government or just like to kill people and they don’t all have “al” or “bin” in their name.
Adjusted limitations
As I shot my cousin’s Sweet 16 as the official photographer, I realized that I didn’t need the box of AA alkalines I had taken with me to the event. It turned out that my two canon batteries and the NiMH batteries in the flash gun and battery belt were more than enough for nearly continuous shooting from 1730 - 2330. Instead it was my 4 GB of memory which was not quite enough for the event. Even though this allowed me to take 460+ pictures, I ran out prematurely - sometime around 2245, after which I had to try and delete any photos which appeared not to have come out right. Yes, I know, a typical wedding only has 300 shots or so, but I wanted to capture candids as well as all of the official photos. For the posed pictures I also shot a few too many, I think. I’m currently loading the pictures onto my computer, but I would estimate taking 3 pictures of each pose. This was mostly due to my inexperience. I didn’t want to just have one photo of each and then end up that it was over or under exposed or someone was blinking or something. We’ll see how it all came out soon enough.
