Faster Purple Worm Game 1: Everybody Dies in the Eye of the Beholder
Last year I was a Kickstarter backer for Faster Purple Worm, Kill! Kill! By Beadle and Grimm. (Available for Pre-Order here). I was originally going to use it as a low-stakes way to introduce some family and friends to TTRPGs. It would be low-stakes since everyone is expected to die at the end anyway, so no one has to feel sad or disappointed if they die since it’s expected. However, the timing of getting together hasn’t worked out well recently.
Kobold Press Players Guide 2 Kickstarter
Today Kobold Press opened up the Kickstarter for thier Player’s Guide 2. While Kobold Press has already done a couple Kickstarters that are going to dramatically expand Tales of the Valiant when they come out later this year (Enter the Labyrinth - both a campaign book and a setting book; Monster Vault 2 - an expansion of their bestiary), Player’s Guide 2 is a huge expansion to the Tales of the Valiant ruleset. I, for one, am very excited about this update. Actually, I’m not the only one - at the time that I am writing this (end of the first day of the Kickstarter) there are 1461 backers that have pledged $114,000 against a $50k goal. This means after just about 8 hours they’ve almost reached 3/4 of their stretch goals.
Dungeon in a Box Session 9 Recap
The Adventure
As the crew sails towards the Astral plane they suddenly see tons of flowers in the water as well as lots of sea creatures. Thomas checks the flowers, but they are normal. (ie not magical) Suddenly the current seems to “grab” the ship and start pulling it to an island. The Captain has everyone head to various stations where they can help with navigation and they help avoid any damage to the ship. The current carries the ship far up the shore and it’s beached. Thomas attempts to push the ship, but it’s way too heavy and too far ashore.
Dungeon in a Box Session 8 Recap
The Adventure
The living star, which takes the shape of a turtle, is named Shelly by the crew. It becomes over-excited while playing with the crew and causes some of the wood on the ship to sprout leaves and branches and attracts the attention of a squid-like sea monster. After the heroes get rid of the sea monster, the Oahtu who joined the journey a while ago help repair the ship.
TTRPG Kickstarters May 2025 Update
Back in October I made a post about the TTRPG kickstarters I’d backed. Here’s an update:
Backed in 2025
Humblewood: Beyond the Canopy by Hit Point Press - Part 2 of the Humblewood story. My kids are very excited that this kickstarter is due to be fulfilled this year (for Digital items). While I’m glad we don’t have to wait until next year to play and while it means that maybe the USA tariff issues will be done by then, the fact that physical delivery is 6+ months after digital kept me from ordering the whole physical item she-bang.
Misfit Dice April 2025
It’s literally been years since I went into a Barnes and Noble. Ever since I went fully digital (or MOSTLY fully digital) with my books, I haven’t really had the occasion. But today we were in the vicinity of a B&N and the kids wanted to go inside. As I was wandering around I came to the Dungeons and Dragons table and happened to find a packet of Misfit dice. As you guys know, I have no further need of dice, but at $11 it was an easy impulse buy. I was actually really happy with the dice that came in the package.
Tales of the Valiant Campaign 01 Session 05
The Adventure
The team’s boat arrives at Wollerton. As they arrive, they hear the sounds of a brawl at the local bar. After someone is thrown out the window, the adventurers attempt to calm the bar brawl. There’s also a halfling with a sign yelling that the end is nigh. The party tries calmly asking people to stop, but the humans and dwarves do not listen. A mastic that belongs to one of the brawlers ends up biting Jackal. Eventually they end up dragged into the fight. A human and dwarf attempt to head butt each other and knock each other out. Eventually Appeluna ends the fight by casting sleep on the brawlers.
Tales of the Valiant Campaign 01 - Sessions 03 and 04
The Adventure
The team arrived at Moonlight where the scrawler dropped them off in the middle of town. The old orc and Silgre both also got off the Scrawler. After a brief conversation, the adventurers decided to go to the mayor’s house first. There they were hired to rid the town of kobolds. They agreed on a payment of 25GP per person and 3 nights room and board paid at the tavern.
Review: Dungeon Master's Guide 2024
Dungeon Master’s Guide by Wizards of the Coast

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Marketing is often lies or half-truths dressed up to try and trick our stupid animal brains - pushing past our rationality. I’m happy to report that in this case, the marketing was, in my humble opinion, not a lie. We were told that this was a new, useful Dungeon Master’s Guide - more useful than the 2014 guide. I found this to be true. I don’t think I’ve re-opened the 2014 DMG since first reading it. It was really structured as a reference book or manual. The 2024 DMG is full of very useful information.<
Koboldcon 2025: A Brief Review
If you’ve been reading my blog for the last few months, you know that I have fallen in love with the TTRPG publisher Kobold Press, creators of Tales of the Valiant. They recently held their second virtual convention, KoboldCon. I wanted to write up a quick review of what is effectively my first TTRPG convention.
First of all, the virtual aspect of the convention. During the COVID pandemic convention season (2020-2021), I attended quite a few virtual conventions - usually programming language conventions like PyCon. Many of those attempted to recreate the physical aspects of the convention like having virtual hallway tracks and profile areas where you can get to know your fellow attendees. Kobold Press went for a lower tech solution, but one that I think worked perfectly for what they were trying to do.
