As the city bells go off, the heroes arrive at the town square. They see a rare sight - elven folk - surrounded by the Ironguard and an unruly crowd forming. The town hasn’t seen elves in decades and is scared this might be an invasion. Tris stops the riot and calms the townfolk. She speaks with the elves and finds out that they are under attack by giant spiders. Their pact not to harm forest life means they can’t do anything about this. The group agrees to help the elves.
Eventually they reach the Elves’ living area - a set of treehouses. As the group climbs up they are attacked by gargantuan spiders. After they reach the building they see a spider attacking elves. Grumpy gets the spider to chase him while Triss cuts the elves free from their silken traps. Grump gets the spider to dizzy that it dies from a large fall.
The team continues going from building to building dealing with spiders. In one room they find a bulging spider eating everything it can. They decide to help it eat more and eventually it explodes, its babies crawling everywhere. When they arrive at the final connected tree, the elves’ Temple, they fight an Ettercap. Sasha uses color spray against it to blind it for the beginning of combat. After the combat is over, the heroes are tired and rest for the night.
The next day they enter the temple and discover a purple ooze that seems to be corrupting everything. There are purple webs everywhere that Grump clears with his axe to avoid touching the corruption. Eventually they save a group of elves. Later on they save another group and both groups accuse the other of being imposters. Tris figures out which group is fake and they defeat the Doppelgangers.
At the base of the tree that serves as the temple they find and defeat a Drider.
After another night’s rest the group descends further. They see down a deep hole in the center that elves are being loaded into a cart by the evil Moon Elves. They begin going down and fight a huge purple earthworm. Then they see a queen ant use a “water balloon” to get her army to attack corrupted ants. Grumpy tells everyone in the group to grab 2 water balloons. They descend to the lower level and see there are 6 moon elves and a corrupted drider to defeat. Before just bounding in they make a plan of attach - Tris will free the elves from the cart while Grumpy and Sasha use the water balloons to attack the Moon Elves and drider.
Grumpy begins the attack by setting the ants on the drider. As he and Sasha attack the elves, Tris stealthily goes to the cart and frees the elves who menace the moon elves with their sheer numbers. Eventually the group is victorious. There is a titanium spike that seems to be causing the corruption. Grumpy decides to use his gauntlet to protect his hands and removes it. This stops the corruption of the temple. The team receives many gifts from the elves as gratitude.
GM Notes
Two things surprised me - that the twins knew to take the water with them (the book assumed the players might need hints to do that) and that Sam decided that Grumpy’s gauntlets would protect him from the corrupted spike. I rewarded that latter creativity by giving him advantage on his save to remove the spike.
One more trilogy to go so I’m going to level the kids up to level 5 (the highest level for which dnd adventure club provides modifications to the creatures and saves).
