As Grumpy, Tris, and Sasha were at the local tavern getting some cinnamon rolls, they noticed a goblin nailing something to the notice board. It turns out to be one of the kids of the owners of the Pits of Perild, an amusement park and beginner dungeon. They agree to help him. On the way to the park they fight some vampire bats while camping.
When they arrive they learn from the matriarch that Troglodytes are not honoring their agreement. They were supposed to stay in the lower levels (away from the starter dungeon first level) and only eat any unlucky adventurers that went in deep. Now they have infiltrated the first level and are attacking the guests. The team decides they will help figure out what’s going on. Also, they are to keep an eye out for her husband.
In the first room Grumpy moves towards a pile of gold and gets electrecuted. It turns out to be lead painted gold. From there they ignore many of the other possible paths and head directly down the stairs. There they are confronted by a dragon, but it turns out to be a fake dragon. Then they are attacked by animated armor. They throw the armor away and learn that it’s just a poltergeist that works for the family to scare greenhorn adventurers.
As they worked their way down, Grumpy wondered if good aventurers were getting eaten by the Troglodytes. (He finds the deal the family has struck with the Troglodytes dubious)
When they got to the bottom there was a locked door and Sasha picked it rather than trying to get it from the Troglodyte king.
As they go into the Troglodyte living areas they find a room with many colored pools. Grumpy and Tris drink from some of them and Tris ends up floating like a balloon. As they continue checking different rooms, they come to a river. Grumpy pushes her across with a rope to tie to a stalagtite. The others use that to cross.
When they descend further, they end up in a tower. Upon opening the door they fight a bunch of skeletons. More skeletons come and a dwarf blows them up.
Grumpy tries to scale the wall on his own, but there are to many skeletons for him to handle on his own. The team goes to the dwarf and agrees to help the goblins leave. After they convince the goblins to go, they explore and find a murkling shop. In addition to shopping, they find Pb3rt (a robot) and the murklings let them know that only full skeletons can be animated so they’ve been stealing pinkies. Pb3rt joins them as the go through murkling secret passageway to the castle.
Luckily the skeleton army on the inside of the wall is made of skeletons missing pinkie fingers. They enter the castle and they fight the necromancer. Grumpy ignores the threat of the skeletons protecting the necromancer and charges the necromancer. Together with Sasha’s bow and arrow, they kill the necromancer in one round.
GM Notes
I’ve already learned this by now (and blogged about it), but the girls aren’t really into dungeon crawls. Scarlett, especially, prefers the roleplay part of TTRPGs. When I saw this module was tagged as a “traditional dungeon crawl” I wa a little worried. They did, indeed, get bored after the first book. However, we pushed through the following week and finished things up.
Since the kids aren’t really into dungeon crawls they missed a whole bunch of rooms. Tons of things they might have dealt with were skipped as they took the most direct route to the ending.
This was also the second or third time that the kids have defeated the enemy in one round. They kids always celebrate and I always just laugh.
