2024 End Of Year Music Retrospective (Last.FM and Spotify Listening Trends)

Overall, this year I listened to tons of Chillhop while at work. Since 99% of Chillhop doesn’t have lyrics, this would allow me to have some background music that wasn’t distracting. As each new Chillhop album was released for the current season, I would listen to it on loop for a while. I also made playlists of all the albums per season that I would listen to as well. Every once in a while I would listen to all my music on random (as I usually do), but this was a year in which I was more focused on listening to newly acquired albums when I wasn’t listening to Chillhop.
There were a few other interesting things I did that might affect this year’s stats:
For my first work week in January I listened to almost the entire Beatles catalog. Later on in the year I was listening to a song with “mirror” in the title and I remembered another mirror song I wanted to listen to: Mirrors by Wale and Bun B. Aftre that I queued up every song with Mirror in the title. In April I had a lot of employee reviews to read so I listened to lots of music without lyrics (not just chillhop, but also vaporwave and video game remixes). In late May I had a mini obsession with Billie Eilish (particularly the song Lunch) and Childish Gambino’s Little Foot, Big Foot. This is most evident in my Spotify top songs. All Summer long I was obsessed with Chillhop Calm Mornings and Chillhop Summer Essentials. Finally, during the first half of the year I bought/was gifted less new albums than usual.

Top Artist of 2024
- My Sister’s Fugazi Shirt (247) - Most of these listens came from when I was listening to songs without lyrics in April. I like most of the albums that use samples from anime or video games. I’m not as much of a fan of the few albums that have his vocals.
- MxPx (241) - A lot of these listens came from preparing for the February concert in New York by refreshing my memory of all the old songs. I went back through the entire catalog in preparation. After that many MxPx songs also came up randomly.
- Kill Lincoln (227) - Kill Lincoln came out with a new album, No Normal, and also had a concert this year so I listened a lot to the back catalog in preparation for the concert in addition to playing a lot of the new album.
- Sabrina Carpenter (212) - As you saw in the previous section, I got the past couple Sabrina Carpenter albums this year. I find her sense of humor and lyrical wordplay to be a ton of fun. I was able to listen over and over without getting bored of the songs. I think many of the songs that weren’t the radio singles were really great, although it’s undeniable that the radio singles were definitely ear worms.
- The Beatles (209) - As I mentioned in the trends section, I listened to nearly the entire catalog last January. That accounts for nearly all these listens.
- Half Past Two (192) - This band came out with a new album on Bad Time records. I checked out a couple songs on Bandcamp and loved the band’s sound. I’ve been meaning to do a blog post on their album, Talk Is Killing Me, for a few months now; hopefully I’ll find time soon. I’m surprised that I listened to the album this much, but I did put it on repeat quite a bit when I first got it. I have not grown sick of the album and I even threw it on while writing this blog post.
- The Ataris (161) - I think I may have heard the cover song on this album, The Boys of Summer, at some point in the past. But I’d otherwise avoided any real knowledge of this band. All these listens were in preparation for when they were the opening band for MxPx in February. The concert was only these two bands (no no-name openers) and I wanted to be able to enjoy The Ataris set.
- Anberlin (156) - They’re as perennial as the Beatles on this yearly blog post. I haven’t intentionally thrown on Anberlin too much recently, but I have played it when in the car with the wife.
- YUNG BAE (138) - I’ve written about YUNG BAE in the past, but for 2024 I was mostly listening for non-lyric (or Japanese-lyric) music. That said, I did listen on Spotify a bit to his newest album to see what it sounded like.
- Juan Luis Guerra 4.40 (130) - I got the Grandes Exitos album as a gift and I really got obsessed with it for a few months. Then I completely forgot about Juan Luis Guerra in favor of ska and Chill Hop.
- Jokabi (117) - Once again, this is from when I was listening to music without lyrics at work.
- Taylor Swift (111) - Stella got really obsessed with Taylor Swift and we got the albums we were missing. Even as I have aged out of some of her older songs, I still find most of her catalog to be quite fun to listen to.
- I Fight Dragons (108) - I honestly don’t remember listening to this much I Fight Dragons in 2024. The group is on hiatus, so they haven’t released any new albums. That said, I literally have hundreds of their songs so they’re going to come up often on random.
- Billie Eilish (99) - As I mentioned in the introduction, I got very obsessed with Eilish’ latest album last year. I’m actually surprised that I didn’t log MORE listens.
- Macroblank (91) - More lyric-less listens.
- The Holophonics (91) - I really love their Chrono Trigger concept album and sometimes I’ll get into a mood where I play it on repeat.
- Super Piano 64 (89) - Some of these listens came from when I couldn’t access my music at work for a week so I was listening to a Gamechops playlist on Spotify. Most of them came from checking out the album Mario & Sleep.
- This Repeats (83) - I kickstarted their album of the same name. It’s definitely a bit of an odd duck of an album, considering the bands they were in before, but there’s something very raw abuut the sound and the lyrics on the album that really speaks to me. I’m especially a fan of I Fell into This.
- Fall Out Boy (73) - These mostly came from random plays.
- Relient K (64) - A mix of random plays and the fact tha they have a Christmas album that I played a bit this year.
Top Albums 0f 2024
Most of these are not a surprise given what I wrote above about the various artists. However, there are a couple surprises on here. As usual this comes from the difference between artists that I listened to because I really enjoyed one album and artists that I have across lots of albums.
- Half Past Two - Talk Is Killing Me (156) - As I wrote in the artists section, I loved this album. My favorite songs were Curse the Universe and I Don’t Dream Anymore.
- Kill Lincoln - No Normal (134) - Their new album and it accounted for half the listens this year. My favorite song is the first single, I’m Fine (I Lied)
- Juan Luis Guerra 4.40 - Grandes Éxitos De Juan Luis Guerra 4 40 (129) - since this album is his Greatest Hits, every song on here is awesome. I found the most creative one to be Carta de Amor which is a love letter that the protagonist is dictating. The song includes “period” and “start a new paragraph” as part of the bridges.
- Jokabi - Chilltendo Deluxe (104) - I’ve covered this album in the past. It’s a bunch of great cover songs from Nintendo games.
- Sabrina Carpenter - Short n’ Sweet (93) - Carpenter’s latest album. I don’t think there’s one song on here I don’t enjoy for some reason or another.
- The Holophonics - LAVOS (91) - As I mentioned above, I love this Chrono Trigger concept album.
- Sabrina Carpenter - emails i can’t send fwd: (86) - Carpenter’s previous album. It’s also full of a lot of fun songs, but it’s not quite as innovative as the latest one.
- Super Piano 64 - Mario & Sleep (85) - Think of this album as covers of Mario music that you can put on while you fall asleep.
- This Repeats - This Repeats (82) - Not much to say that I didn’t say above.
- Billie Eilish - HIT ME HARD AND SOFT (81) - Like everyone else, I like the singles - Lunch, Chihiro, and Birds of a Feather.
- The Ataris - So Long, Astoria (66) - This album has lots of songs that reference The Goonies which takes place in or near Astoria, Washington.
- My Sister’s Fugazi Shirt - Nautilus (65) - I have tons of his albums because they were pretty cheap on Bandcamp. The Nautilus series is pretty great; full of Playstation sounds along with other mixes and original beats.
- Kill Lincoln - Can’t Complain (63) - The other Kill Lincoln album I own. As I mentioned above, I listened to it quite a bit in preparation for the No Normal album release concert.
- Anberlin - Vega (60) - This is the latest Anberlin release, but, unfortunately, it was a combination of the previous EPs with just a few extra songs.
- Moderator - Forbidden Acts Of Vaudeville (54) - This surprise entry is an example of what I mentioned in the opening paragraph to this section. They didn’t make it to the top artists this year because I only have a couple albums by Moderator. But I did listen to this one quite a bit. It’s a very interesting album that combines a carney sound with a hip hop beat.
- MxPx - Punk Rawk Christmas (50) - Every year I have various Christmas playlists that I play. What I like the most about this album (compared to other non-traditional Christmas albums) is that it’s all original music. I don’t mind a rock and roll version of Jingle Bells or another Christmas standard. But as I get older I think there are certain songs that sound best in their original version. For example, I’ve spoken before on this blog about how there was a period of time that I was really into contemporary Christian music (artists like DC Talk, Audio Adrenaline, or Newsboys). I also got albums like Nitro Praise or several Insyderz albums that were either house music or ska versions of the songs we sang at church. I think that, overall, that’s probably a mistake. Most of those songs sound better as a capella. Also, why did Mariah Carrey get to make the last new Christmas song? We should have more artists making new Christmas music (along with the standards if they want)
- YUNG BAE - 6AE (50) - The latest album by this artist - in which they have achieved a high enough status that they have lots of collaborations on this album.
- Various Artists - Chillhop Essentials Summer 2024 (47) - I mentioned really being into the Chillhop albums this year. I’m a little surprised more of them didn’t make the cut, but I’m sure they’re hiding just below #20.
- My Sister’s Fugazi Shirt - Nautilus II: Decaying Dreams (46) - As I mentioned, I like the Nautilus series.
- haircuts for men - sampler (44) - This is from the playlist of music without lyrics.
Top Tracks of 2024
I’m pretty happy that I ended up with lots of the Chillhop tracks on there. Usually those types of albums get lots of play, but the tracks get obscured by more mainstream albums. I don’t have much to say about any particular chillhop song, so I will have minimal commentary on those entries.
- Sabrina Carpenter - Espresso (26) - I think almost anyone who listens to pop music would have this song at or near the top. It was a force of nature that was hard to ignore and also catchy as heck.
- Kill Lincoln - I’m Fine (I Lied) (23) - As I mentioned above, this was my favorite song from No Normal. It’s also a single they released before the album came out, so I listened to it more than any other song on the album.
- Half Past Two - Holiday (21) - This one is a bit tricky. Half Past Two released an album that had 4 covers of songs by other artists; the only requirement was that the song was called Holiday. Because of the way the rules work on with last.fm scrobbling, if I listened to the whole album at once, I think it would only scrobble one of them as it would think it was the same song over and over. But if I had another song in between, it would scrobble. Anyway, I really like the concept.
- Enough Cereals - Suave (20) - a chillhop song
- less.people - Lamp Glow (20) - a chillhop song
- Mac Kay - Shade (19) - a chillhop song
- Aves - Lakeside (18) - a chillhop song
- Billie Eilish - LUNCH (18) - Just like Espresso, I found this song to be irresistably catchy.
- MR SLIPZ - Stay Gold (18) - a chillhop song
- Illiterate - Soulangeana, ft. Dom R (17) - a chillhop song
- Juan Luis Guerra 4.40 - El Costo De La Vida (17) - A lot of his songs are not just catchy, but are also very political. This one was about the Dominican Republic getting exploited by larger countries. It also has a cool music video.
- Kill Lincoln - All Worries (17) - my second favorite song from No Normal.
- TESK - Spanish (17) - a chillhop song
- Boukas, A D M B - Melvin, ft. Fredrik Bergsten & Samuel Axelson (16) - a chillhop song
- C4C - Watermill (16) - a chillhop song
- Enough Cereals - Sundown (16) - a chillhop song
- BAO - Jade (15) - a chillhop song
- Enzalla - Dreamscape Lagoon (15) - a chillhop song
- Half Past Two - Dominoes (15) - Using dominoes as a metaphor for losing control of things.
- Ian Ewing - Forgiven (15) - a chillhop song
Top Overall Artists
- Five Iron Frenzy (5522) (no change) - Only 62 listens in 2024. I had predicted that MxPx would take the top spot in 2024, but Five Iron Frenzy was able to hold on. If things don’t change in 2025 and I do another 200-ish listens for MxPx, they will finally lose their spot. Things that might make me listen to a bunch more Five Iron Frenzy would include preparing for a concert or a new album release.
- MxPx (5358) (no change) - Last year I listened 833 times. This year was only in the 200s. It makes sense as I had to naturally reduce the amount of listens or risk getting tired of the band. Still, even if we just stay the same as this year, they could end up overtaking FIF. Also, if they’re back to their old pace of album releases, they might have another one coming out this year.
- Anberlin (4579) (no change) - It was encouraging to see the release of Vega this year. I hope they have fully reunited and come out with a full album that isn’t a rehash of EPs. That said, they seem pretty safe from the Beatles for a while.
- The Beatles (3928) (rose by 1 position) - The Beatles have finally overtaken Fantastic Plastic Machine. I predict they’ll probably stay pretty comfortablly at the #4 position for a while. I Fight Dragons needs a lot more listens to challenge them. That said, I imagine they’ll probably eventually sink, just like FPM.
- Fantastic Plastic Machine (3836) (fell by 1 position) - A few years ago FPM was at a #1 position that seemed unassailable. But as each year passes, I really don’t actively seek to play his music and other artists climb up. It’s no surprise that it has fallen and may eventually fall off the list completely.
- I Fight Dragons (3539) (no change) - Just like Relient K, I don’t listen too much on purpose. Both these artists got LOTS and LOTS of plays when they were new. So I mostly just let them come up randomly.
- Relient K (3316) (no change) - Going off what I said for IFD, I have no idea if they will trade places next year. There is one Relient K album I don’t yet have, but I’m also not in a hurry to buy it. Time will tell.
- “Weird Al” Yankovic (2087) (no change) - I have read that Weird Al doesn’t see the point of doing album releases anymore. By releasing singles he can better keep up with the songs he’s parodying. That said, other than a polka mix, I haven’t seen much from him. I think his position is mostly safe for a few years becauase of the distance between Weird Al and those below. MAYBE Fall Out Boy could surge in 2025.
- The PDX Broadsides (1968) (no change) - With only about 10 listens for 2025, I’m not surprised it didn’t go higher. I am surprised the band hasn’t fallen. That said, they still owe their EP from the Kickstarter from before COVID, so one can always hope.
- Fall Out Boy (1915) (no change) - They are VERY close to The PDX Broadsides. I could very easily see them moving up to #9 and MAYBE even #8. Beyond that I would have to really have a hankering for FOB in 2025.
- Jonathan Coulton (1730) (no change) - I listened WAY less than I did last year. Last year I had 50ish listens and this year 12ish listens. I think he’s pretty safe from Lana and Chance, but YUNG BAE may overtake them all in 2025.
- Lana Del Rey (1594) (no change) - Once again, a dramatic drop in listens. Close to 30 listens this year compared last year when I listened 100 times. Maybe she’ll come out with an album that’s a return to the early trip hop stuff.
- Chance the Rapper (1366) (rose by 1 position) - Chance FINALLY beat the Bee Gees! I think he would probably be higher if the Christmas album he did with Jeremih counted. That said, I did listen a bit to The Big Day.
- YUNG BAE (1361) (rose by 2 positions) - The biggest riser in 2024. I did mention them last year as a potential new entrant to the list this year. One of my predictions finally came true. I think if I listen a lot more for non-vocal music in 2025, he could potentiall leapfrog a bunch of positions.
- Bee Gees (1359) (fell by 2 positions) - Only 6 listens in 2024. It’s entirely possible that they fall off the list in 2025.
Off the list this year:
- Gnarls Barkley (1235) - I did listen a little to their first album, but it wasn’t enough to keep them on the list. I don’t think they’ll make it back.
Potentials for Next Year:
- Dj CUTMAN (1138) - They rose from #20 last year to #18 this year. They only need me to put their entire discography on once or twice to be able to kick the Bee Gees off the list
- Taylor Swift (1089) - last year I mentioned Taylor as a potential. They have risen from 28 to 23. But I’m not sure I would listen 300 times in 2025 unless I wanted to listen to all her music. I find it catchy, but not THAT catchy.
I don’t really see anyone else who’s close given the listens necessary to make the top 15. But I’m always willing to be surprised.
Top Overall Albums
This is the second year I’m looking at top albums, so it’s the first time we can look at trends. Because of the way albums listens are counted vs Artists (across many albums) or Singles (I may have a favorite song), I think the trends for album positions might be more stable over time, but since I just started tracking the trends, I could be completely wrong. Since the graph (like most of the graphs for the overall numbers) is a power law graph, I think this it is true that the top entries will remain stable, but there could also be lots of churn near the bottom.
- Bee Gees - The Ultimate Bee Gees (1343) (no change) - comparing the number of listens on this album to the albums below and the fact that I rarely listen to entire albums (except when they first come out), I think this one is safe for a while.
- Fantastic Plastic Machine - Luxury (976) (no change) - I think this one is also safe, but potentially at risk from Blueprints For The Black Market.
- Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere (932) (no change) - This one will undoubtedly fall eventually since I almost never listen to it.
- Anberlin - Blueprints For The Black Market (916) (no change) - This is one of my favorite Anberlin albums, so it has a lot of hope.
- Five Iron Frenzy - The End Is Here (892) (no change) - I like a lot of songs from this album, but it’s not the one I’m most likely to reach out for when listening to FIF, so I’m unsure.
- Anberlin - Never Take Friendship Personal (850) (no change) - My second-favorite Anberlin album. Could definitely make a play for #5.
- Andrea Echeverri - Andrea Echeverri (834) (no change) - I never listen to this album on purpose so it will definitely fall eventually.
- Fantastic Plastic Machine - Beautiful (793) (no change) - Between this one and Luxury, I’m more likely to play this one.
- I Fight Dragons - Canon Eyes (744) (no change) - it’s IFD’s most recent album. It has a lot of songs I like. But it’s also not my favorite, so I don’t know.
- Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (710) (no change) - Like the Andrea Echeverri album, I never listen to this one on purpose. It will definitely fall. Especially since it’s only 2 listens away from the next album.
- Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap (708) (no change) - My favorite Chance album. I think it can definitely rise.
- Louis Jordan - The Best Of Louis Jordan (688) (no change) - I usually put this on during breakfast on the weekends. I’m not sure how it will do going forward.
- Pizzicato Five - Happy End of the World (585) (no change) - I really like this album, but I often forget about Pizzicato Five.
- MxPx - MxPx (563) (rose 1 position) - Some movement! I really like this album so I can see it rising in the future.
- Five Iron Frenzy - Engine of a Million Plots (561) (fell 1 position) - Interestingly, I did listen to this album right at the end of the year, but it wasn’t enough to keep it at #14.
Potential contenders for 2024:
- Anberlin - New Surrender (527) - of all the albums below, this one (at position 18) is the most likely to get lots of listens in 2025.
Top Overall Tracks
Until they eventually fall off, there are some top tracks here that rose to the ranks 2 years ago because of the way last.fm was scrobbling on my phone at the time, examples are 1, 2, 4, and 6.

- Five Iron Frenzy - Blue Comb ‘78 (109) (no change)
Off the list this year: None
Potentials for 2025:
- Anberlin - Audrey, Start The Revolution! (105) - one of my favorite songs, especially for how different it is compared to their usual songs.
Also, Anberlin songs that could easily make the list in 2025 if I listen to Anberlin a few times:
- Anberlin - Foreign Language (103)
- Anberlin - The Undeveloped Story (102)
- Anberlin - Readyfuels (99)
- Anberlin - Never Take Friendship Personal (96)

Spotify Top 100 Tracks
Most of these have been covered above, so I’m not going to comment on the individual songs. The only artists on this list that weren’t mentioned above are Future, The Calamatrix, The Odd1sOut, and the various Rick and Morty songs. Future was represented for Mask Off which I got addicted to from the dragon episode of Rick and Morty. The Calamatrix is a ska band I was investigating. I like their style which seems to mostly go back to more of the original reggae roots of ska. There are also some playful songs on the album that intersect with R&B and other genres. The Odd1sOut has one song on here - Good Person. It’s a silly song, but my kids kept listening to it so I put it on at work to get it out of my head.
