Rainbow

Lookin' for the Pot 'o Gold in Mehoopany, PA

When I read this article in Digital Photography School, I posted the rainbow photo shown above as an example of how much I had to learn.  Little did I know how much traffic that would generate for me.  In just one day I got 172 views after having spent the past 26 days with 0 views in that period.  It shot up from a photo somewhere in the range of 25-50 views to 213 views as I write this.

Looking at the photo reminded me of what I was thinking when I took it.  We were having an office breakfast at a diner on the side of the road and when I pulled into the parking lot, I saw the rainbow.  I knew I had to photograph it.  I remember thinking as I photographed it that it was such a childish thing to photograph.  After all, only kids are amazed by rainbows.  I know that it’s caused by light refracting off of water droplets in the air.  But, as I stood there photographing it, and later when I loaded it onto my computer, I realized that rainbows can always be a beautiful phenomenon no matter your age.  That fact that you know how it works does not make it any less of a neat arc in the sky, turning the usual monotone blue into a cascade of colours.  And, of course, there’s also the Biblical meaning behind the rainbow.  That adds a symbolic beauty to the rainbow as well.

So, while DPS was just giving tips on better photography, they helped me to reflect on this long forgotten photo.
